Planting by the Signs: Appalachian Folkloric Agriculture// April 20th, 2019// 11am- 2pm
Many people in Appalachia of all persuasions have looked to the celestial bodies to judge when the best times were to plant, to harvest, to weed and much more. Whether you believe in the power of planting with the signs or not, many people, generation after generation have sworn by this astrologically driven system to plan their farms and gardens. We'll go over the signs of the zodiac and their folk understanding as they were utilized in Appalachian folk farming and tasks of life. Today, planting with the signs, aside from the observable effect that it has on garden yields, is another way to sink into relationship with seasonal cycles and observe the turns of the Wheel of the Year.
We'll also review some Spring planting information and tour our small farm. Come join me for this exploration of an ancient art that has persisted in these mountains. Join us while the moon is in Scorpio, on a leaf day.
