Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), is a beloved native shrub to North America. Taught by indigenous healers, Appalachians hailed Spicebush as a blood tonic and fever tree. Called “fever bush” by some do to its diaphoretic qualities, it was used as a twig tea for illness, while the merry red berries were used as a culinary spice known as “poor man’s allspice”. Take to warm the heart, combat chills and fever, and enjoy over ice and seltzer with a shot of apple cider vinegar for blood tonic. This contains a brandy extract of Spicebush berries and local honey.
